Cornwall's brutal 100-mile winter coastal ultra
The Arc 100M is a 173 km point-to-point coastal ultra along Cornwall's South West Coast Path, from the fishing village of Coverack on the Lizard Peninsula to the finish at Perranporth Airfield. The route rounds the Lizard past Kynance Cove, passes Land's End, Cape Cornwall, Botallack and Zennor Head, then crosses Hayle and the Dunes of Doom and rounds Godrevy Head on the way north. It climbs 5,507 metres with a 37-hour time limit, and large sections are run in darkness. Runners must be self-sufficient for long stretches between aid stations; one support crew member may help at designated aid stations, and a drop bag is carried to Land's End. The organisers recommend a UTMB Index of at least 380. It is widely regarded as one of the UK's toughest 100-mile races.

January temperatures in Cornwall can drop below freezing overnight, particularly on exposed coastal headlands. Cold weather kit is mandatory for 2026.
Cornwall in January is notorious for rapidly changing conditions — strong Atlantic winds, heavy rain, and sudden temperature drops are common across the exposed coast path.
Coastal exposure means significant wind on open headlands, particularly around Land's End, Cape Cornwall, and Zennor Head.
