What Makes It Great

The 100-mile course follows the historic Hennepin Canal State Trail on a lollipop route from Sinnissippi Park in Sterling to the finish in Colona, near the Mississippi River. Nearly flat throughout on crushed limestone, packed dirt, and chip-and-seal surfaces, the course traverses an old canal towpath across locks and lift bridges through farmland and prairie towns of northwest Illinois. Runners share the trail with 50-milers before completing an out-and-back on the Feeder Canal before heading west to Colona. A Western States 100 qualifier.

  • Bike pacing is not allowed.

Crew Rules

  • Crew allowed only at designated crew-access aid stations: AS3 (limited, mile 14.9), AS7/15 (mile 32.1/68.9), AS8/14 (mile 38.7/62.4), AS10/12 (mile 47.5/54), AS16 (mile 74.6), AS19 (mile 88.1), AS20 (mile 94.7).
  • Aid station 9/13 (mile 44.3/57.2) has absolutely no crew access — crew appearing there will result in the runner's disqualification.

Weather

Early October in northwest Illinois delivers ideal racing conditions. Daytime highs run 55–65°F (13–18°C) with overnight lows dropping to 35–45°F (2–7°C). The exposed canal towpath amplifies wind chill in the predawn hours. Per race data citing weatherspark.com, October has only a 6% chance of thunderstorms or significant rain — one of the driest months of the year. Runners should layer for cold overnight temps while being prepared to shed layers once the sun rises.

Cold/Hypothermia Risk

Overnight temps drop to 35-45°F (2-7°C); wind chill on the exposed open canal towpath can make it feel significantly colder

High Wind Exposure

Exposed canal towpath has no windbreak for miles; wind amplifies cold especially in the predawn hours
