What Makes It Great

The 100km solo event traverses the full length of the Great Lake Trail from the Waihaha River carpark on the western shore of Lake Taupō to Whakaipo Bay — a point-to-point journey that no other event covers in its entirety, including access across private farmland and forestry. Runners begin in the dark at 5:30am, following the stunning Waihaha and Waihora Trail sections through native bush with lake views, before crossing rolling farmland and an airstrip turnaround at the halfway mark. The back half picks up the Kawakawa section of the Great Lake Trail, descending into Kawakawa Bay, then climbing to Codger's Rock before dropping into Kinloch and hitting the final, infamous W2K Trail and the exposed Headland Loop with panoramic views of Lake Taupō and Tongariro National Park. Finishers are welcomed at Whakaipo Bay with food and a cold Speights.
