98% singletrack bliss — the perfect first ultra on New Zealand's Great Lake Trail.
The 50km event is designed as the entry point into the world of ultras, starting at the Airstrip on Whangamata Road with 50km of the Great Lake Trail's best remaining ahead. Runners descend from the airstrip through native bush into Kawakawa Bay, then climb to Codger's Rock before dropping into Kinloch and joining the W2K Trail for the iconic Headland Loop. At 98% singletrack, this is as pure a trail experience as it gets. A UTMB Index and ITRA-sanctioned event, the 50km is beginner-friendly but still demands respect, with 859m of elevation gain and a generous 14-hour cutoff.
