What Makes It Great

The UTME is the flagship distance of the Ultra Trail do Marão, a point-to-point odyssey traversing three mountain ranges — Marão, Alvão, and Aboboreira — across 118 kilometres of wild northern Portugal. Starting at night from Mondim de Basto in Trás-os-Montes, the course passes through Alvão Natural Park with its spectacular Fisgas de Ermelo waterfalls, tackles the fearsome Marão Vertical KM, summits the Vértice do Marão (1,416m) at the Astronomical Observatory refuge, and finally descends to finish in the medieval riverside city of Amarante. Granite-village hamlets, centuries-old pastoral trails, and ancient megalithic necropoli mark the journey through landscapes that have kept their secrets for millennia.
