What Makes It Great

A 48-mile out-and-back through Leadville's historic mining district on Colorado's high plateau. The course follows dirt roads first blazed by 19th-century prospectors and their burros, winding past storied gold and silver mines east of town under the shadow of 14,000-foot peaks. The start/finish sits above 10,000 feet and the route climbs to a high point of 12,024 feet — every mile is run at altitude. Seven well-supplied aid stations line the course, with crew access available at three points including the halfway turnaround. The Silver Rush 50 Run is one of the official qualifying events for the Leadville Trail 100 Run, with performance-based and lottery qualifier coins awarded to finishers.

Based on historical averages for July 11

July in Leadville means classic high-altitude Colorado mountain weather. Race morning starts cool at 40–50°F at the 6 AM gun, warming quickly to the mid-60s to low 70s by midday. The exposed dirt road course offers little shade, so sun intensity at altitude is significant. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the Colorado Rockies and can build rapidly above timberline, bringing lightning, hail, and sharp temperature drops — runners should be prepared for both intense morning sun and stormy afternoon conditions on the return leg.
