A 30 km skyrunning race with 2,365 m of climbing and chained rock in Valea Gaura
The organisers class the 30k as a skyrunning race rather than a trail run, and the numbers explain why: 2,365 m of climbing packed into 30.1 km. It starts at 09:00 from Bran Castle and shares the brutal opening climb with the longer races, gaining 1,450 m in 10 km to Saua Tiganesti before dropping to the Malaiesti hut. From there it takes the steep stone path up the Malaiesti Valley to Hornurile Malaiesti at 2,378 m, then turns for home down Valea Gaura, a rocky descent with fixed chains, to the Poiana Gaura checkpoint. The last third is a gradual run out through forest and forest road, with short stings at Saua Polite and Muchia Grajdului before the castle.

Late May in the Bran valley is usually mild, around 8 to 20 C at the 750 m start. Higher on the course, conditions are colder and far more changeable, with wind, fog, rain and hail all possible. Snow and ice can still be present on the higher ground in late May.
Snowfall in the Bucegi in late May is not uncommon and temperatures can fall well below freezing above treeline.
