82.5 km over the Bucegi plateau by way of Babele, sharing the 05:00 castle start with the 100k
The 80k shares the pre-dawn start at Bran Castle with the 100k and follows it for the first 27 km, over Saua Tiganesti, the Malaiesti hut and Varful Omu at 2,505 m. At the Pestera checkpoint the two races part: instead of looping back over Omu, the 80k climbs steeply to the Babele rock formations at 2,206 m, then descends the plateau to Piatra Arsa and runs the long gradual traverse to Bolboci. From Saua Strunga the course drops into Moieciu de Sus and works back through Poiana Gutanu and Poiana Gaura to the castle. It saves roughly 20 km and 1,500 m of climbing on the 100k but keeps all of the high alpine ground, the night running and the full mandatory kit, including the GPS device and waterproof over-trousers the two long races alone must carry.

Late May in the Bucegi is a shoulder season. Bran village sits at 750 m and is usually mild, around 8 to 20 C, but the course spends many hours above 1,900 m where it is far colder. Snowfall on the plateau in late May is not unusual, and the organisers warn that temperatures above treeline can drop well below freezing, especially overnight. Wind, fog, rain and hail can all arrive within the same day, and lingering snowfields and ice are common on the high traverses around Varful Omu and Hornurile Malaiesti.
