The manual lists no organized camping. Crew may not camp at aid stations, in any vehicle type. Runners get cots or pads at sleep stations, with a 6-hour limit; these are for registered runners only.
Late March and early April bring large temperature swings. The manual gives a range from about 10°F at night in the mountains to over 100°F by day in the desert, and says it has dropped as low as 7°F. Weather fronts can build quickly, and water sources between aid stations are few.
The manual warns of extremely cold nights, and mandatory gear reflects it.
