What Makes It Great

A mountain summit race ascending from the heart of historic Silverton to the 13,066-foot top of Kendall Mountain. The route climbs jeep roads from downtown before a final 300-foot vertical scramble to the summit, rewarding runners with sweeping views of the surrounding San Juan peaks before the descent back to Memorial Park. Held annually since 1978, the race traces its origins to a legendary 1908 bar bet in which a 53-year-old miner ascended and descended the mountain in under 90 minutes.
