What Makes It Great

A 100-mile journey starting at Beal's Point on Folsom Lake that stitches together two iconic Northern California trail races — the American River 50 and Way Too Cool 50K. Runners traverse oak woodland and river canyons, run the Johnny Cash Trail through Historic Folsom, cross the 109-year-old No Hands Bridge, and ascend the Western States Trail to the Auburn Dam Overlook before retracing the route home. The course is a lollipop with a small lake loop at Beal's Point bookending a long out-and-back into Auburn.

  • Runners may use multiple different pacers across segments, but only one pacer may accompany a runner at any time
  • No muling — pacers may not carry food, fluids, or gear for the runner
  • Pacers must be on foot only — no bikes, horses, electric devices, or skates. Minimum age 18.

Crew Rules

  • Crew access permitted at Beal's Point (start/finish/mile 21.48), Granite Beach, Rattlesnake Bar, and Auburn Dam Overlook
  • No crew or spectator access at: Willow Creek, Black Miners Bar, Horseshoe Bar, Cardiac, No Hands Bridge, Auburn Lake Trails, Highway 49, or Granite Beach on the return leg. Violations result in runner disqualification.
  • All crew vehicles must pay a $12 California State Parks day-use fee at each park entrance (or hold a Golden Poppy Pass)
Weather

Early November in California's Sierra Nevada foothills brings cool, generally dry conditions. Daytime highs average around 66°F (19°C) while overnight lows drop to around 42°F (6°C). Runners cover a significant portion of the course in darkness, making layers essential. Morning fog is possible in the American River canyon sections. The low-elevation course (approximately 300–1,400 ft) avoids alpine weather but conditions can change — prepare for anything.

Gear Rules
