A demanding 100-mile point-to-point course starting at China Wall trailhead and finishing in historic downtown Auburn. The route follows portions of the iconic Western States Trail through the canyons of the North Fork American River, with steep descents to river crossings and punishing climbs back out. Features the Devil's Thumb descent, Rucky Chucky river crossing, and the notorious K2 climb near Cool, accumulating over 18,000 feet of climbing across rugged Sierra Nevada foothill terrain.

April racing in the Sierra Nevada foothills means highly variable conditions. Mornings at the China Wall start often arrive cold and foggy, while canyon floors can warm quickly by midday. Spring storms occasionally roll through during race weekend, bringing cold rain, hail, and even snow at elevation. Night temperatures between the canyons dip well below 50°F. During warmer years, exposed sections at lower river elevations can push into the 80s in the afternoon. The mandatory gear check enforces both a hot weather kit (sunglasses, sunscreen, 2L water) and a cold weather kit (waterproof overpants, warm hat, warm gloves, protective eyewear) that may be required based on conditions announced pre-race.
