The Hare division is Run Rabbit Run's race for the podium. Hares start at 1:00 pm on Friday, four hours after the Tortoises, and share the same 100-mile loop above Steamboat Springs — but they run it to a tighter deadline: 7:00 pm Saturday, thirty hours.
Hares run for prize money, paid seven deep when the field is large enough, with a masters premium, a team championship, and a $1,000 preem for the first runner to reach the top of the gondola. Tortoises run the same course for awards.
The trade for the money is a stricter race. Hares get no pacer except through town between Spring Creek Trailhead and Olympian Hall, in both directions, and again over the last few miles from the gondola. Crew may help only at designated crew aid stations, at the gondola top, and through town. You may switch between Hare and Tortoise until 7 September 2026.

September race days in Steamboat Springs bring reliably unpredictable mountain weather. In town, average highs are around 72°F (22°C) with overnight lows near 42°F (6°C), but the course spends long stretches above 10,000 feet where temperatures run 20–30°F colder. The overnight leg regularly drops runners into near-freezing conditions on exposed ridgelines and alpine terrain. September afternoons bring frequent afternoon thunderstorms — lightning, hail, and brief but heavy rain are common at altitude. In bad years conditions can be severe: 2011 brought 40 mph winds and blowing snow, and 2022 saw snow, fog, and mud throughout. Race directors strongly advise preparing for all extremes: blazing midday heat on the lower singletrack, freezing darkness on the alpine sections, and rapid deterioration at any point. Warm layers, rain gear, and gloves are essential regardless of the forecast.
