A 65.7-mile loop through State Forest State Park in northern Colorado's Jackson County, running between the Never Summer Mountains on the southern border of Rocky Mountain National Park and the Medicine Bow Range to the north. At an average elevation of 10,220 feet, runners summit North Diamond Peak (11,852 ft) and pass four alpine lakes through a mix of logging roads, off-trail boulder fields, and high-alpine single-track. The course's remoteness is real — cell service is nearly nonexistent and much of the terrain is unmarked wilderness. Finishers under 23 hours earn a Western States 100 lottery qualifier.

July racing in the Never Summer Mountains at 10,000–12,000 feet means chilly pre-dawn starts, warm afternoon sun, and a near-certain encounter with Colorado's afternoon thunderstorms. At the 5:30 AM start, temperatures at the 8,450-foot trailhead typically range from 35–50°F. By midday on the exposed alpine ridgeline near North Diamond Summit, conditions can swing dramatically with strong winds, lightning, and occasional hail or snow. Afternoon thunderstorm windows are most dangerous between noon and 4 PM. Overnight temperatures above 10,000 feet drop below 40°F, making warm layers and a headlamp non-negotiable for the 100k. The high average elevation intensifies UV exposure significantly.
