What Makes It Great

The Sangre de Cristo 100 Mile is one of Colorado's most remote and demanding trail ultras, following the Rainbow Trail along the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness boundary for 101 miles. Starting from Music Meadows Ranch at over 9,000 feet, runners navigate nearly 19,000 feet of climbing while never dropping below that altitude, with the high point at 11,421 feet on Music Pass. The race has a notoriously low finish rate — around 25% — reflecting the combination of altitude, mileage, September mountain weather, and a course that demands consistent execution over 38 hours. The 100-mile field is deliberately capped at 50 runners. Crew vehicles can access Horn Creek and Venable trailheads with a vehicle placard; pacers join from mile 50.

Race Highlights

Never below 9,000 ft
Every mile of the 100-mile course stays above 9,000 feet, with a 11,421 ft summit at Music Pass
Rainbow Trail wilderness boundary
Follows the historic Rainbow Trail along the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness boundary — almost entirely remote singletrack
~25% finish rate
Only 4 of 16 starters finished in 2023, placing it among the most unforgiving 100-milers in the state
38-hour cutoff
A generous cutoff that still sees roughly three-quarters of starters unable to finish in a typical year
HPRS community ethos
No podium, no age groups, no elites-first culture — the DFL finisher is celebrated with equal fanfare as the winner

Finish Awards

Sangre de Cristo Endurance Run Belt Buckle
All official 100-mile finishers receive a custom belt buckle commemorating their achievement.
DFL Award
The last finisher (Dead F*cking Last) receives a comp entry to a future HPRS race, a unique award, and a bottle of liquor — celebrated as a point of pride in the HPRS community.

Crew Access Points

Pacer Rules

  • Pacers may be picked up at Music Meadows 2 (Mile 50.6), Horn Creek 3 (Mile 66.1), Venable (Mile 71.6), Horn Creek 4 (Mile 77.3), and Music Meadows 3 (Mile 92.6).
  • All pacers must sign a waiver, wear a pacer bib, and carry a headlamp (no exceptions). Pacers must be dropped off at the aid station only — no lingering or extra parking at trailheads.

Crew Rules

  • Each 100-miler may have one crew vehicle, which may access Horn Creek and Venable aid stations. A vehicle placard is issued at check-in and must be displayed at all times when in crew areas. High-clearance 4x4 vehicle required for Horn Creek and Venable access.
  • Crews may support runners at Music Meadows (start/finish) every time runners pass through, with no additional restrictions.
  • If more than 25 crew vehicles are present, crews are split into two lots: Lot 1 accesses Horn Creek on the first out-and-back and Venable on the second; Lot 2 accesses Venable first then Horn Creek. If fewer than 25 crews are present on race day, all may access both stations on both passes.
  • Crewing or spectating outside the approved zones (Music Meadows, Horn Creek, Venable) is strictly prohibited as a condition of the USFS permit.
