What Makes It Great

The Umstead 100 is designed to help runners make the leap from 50 miles to 100 miles by removing severe topography, navigation challenges, and extreme heat from the equation. Eight 12.5-mile laps through William B. Umstead State Park on well-maintained multi-use trails yield about 7,250 feet of total climbing over rolling Piedmont terrain. Excellent aid stations, a volunteer pacer program, and an experienced all-volunteer crew make this one of the most accessible and supportive 100-milers in the country.

Weather

The Umstead 100 runs in late March in Raleigh, NC, where Piedmont spring weather is famously variable. Overnight temperatures typically fall into the mid-30s to low 40s°F (2–6°C), while afternoon highs can reach the upper 60s°F (18–20°C). Cold snaps that push overnight lows near freezing are possible, as are warm spells. Spring rain is common and can make the gravel access roads muddy. Humidity is moderate to high. Runners should prepare for a wide range of conditions across the 30-hour window, including cold, wet, and windy overnight hours.
