What Makes It Great

West Virginia's first and only 100-mile trail race, the Rim to River 100 follows an out-and-back route through the heart of New River Gorge National Park, starting and finishing at ACE Adventure Resort. The course alternates dramatically between the gorge rim and the New River banks across 100 miles of singletrack, rail-to-trail, dirt road, and pavement. Along the way, runners pass through ghost towns, abandoned mine shafts, and crumbling structures from the 1800s coal mining communities of Wee-Win, Red Ash, and Brooklyn. The turnaround at Hawks Nest State Park (mile 53) is where pacers can join for the return leg. With 12,000 feet of climbing, a 32-hour cutoff, and overnight running required, this is a substantial challenge — but one that rewards with atmospheric trail running unlike anything else in the East. Proceeds benefit Adventure Appalachia, a non-profit expanding outdoor access in the region.
