What Makes It Great

The Utah 50 Mile traverses the high desert canyon country south of Kanab on an out-and-back course through some of the most dramatic terrain in the American Southwest. Runners encounter the same defining characteristic as the flagship event: deep, fine desert sand that saps energy far beyond what the distance alone suggests. The route follows key sections of the Grand to Grand Ultra through canyon wilderness including red rock climbs, desert mesas, and remote high desert basins, before returning to downtown Kanab. A 20-hour cutoff means most runners will experience both the heat of a May desert afternoon and the cold of the canyon night.
