What Makes It Great

The Backcountry Rise 50K is a single clockwise loop through the Mt. Margaret Backcountry on the northern blast zone side of Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. The course navigates 99% backcountry singletrack through a landscape still recovering from the 1980 eruption: sapphire alpine lakes, craggy volcanic ridgelines, wildflower meadows, and sweeping panoramas of four Cascade volcanoes. Runners pass Bear Pass — the most-photographed view of Mt. St. Helens and Spirit Lake — before traversing a long, dry, exposed ridgeline to Coldwater Peak. With 7,600 feet of gain, significant distances between remote hike-in aid stations, and an experience requirement, this is an advanced-level race that demands self-reliance and preparation.

Race Highlights

7,600 ft of climbing
A continuous clockwise loop gaining nearly 1.5 vertical miles through remote Mt. Margaret Backcountry above Coldwater Lake
12.4 miles between aid stations
The Bear Camp to South Coldwater segment is completely dry — no water resupply, fully exposed ridgeline running
Bear Pass & Coldwater Peak
Summits Coldwater Peak via short out-and-back delivering 360° views of Mt. St. Helens, Spirit Lake, Mt. Adams, Mt. Rainier, and Mt. Hood
Experience required
Prior trail ultra finish mandatory — this advanced course demands mountain self-reliance and has humbled many experienced runners
Volcanic wildlife corridor
Elk herds, mountain goats, bald eagles, and black bears inhabit the still-recovering blast zone ecosystem
