What Makes It Great

The Black Squirrel Trail Half Marathon takes runners on a perimeter tour of Lory State Park's finest trails, climbing nearly 1,500 feet from the Soldier Canyon Picnic Area up the Timber Trail to Lory's west ridge at 7,000 feet. The route rewards the effort with panoramic views over Horsetooth Reservoir and the Great Plains to the east and the Rocky Mountain peaks to the west, before a rapid and technical descent drops runners back into rolling hardpack singletrack for the final three-and-a-half miles to the finish. With 12 miles of singletrack and a mix of technical climbing and fast finishing terrain, it's a well-rounded trail half marathon that's challenging yet accessible.
