A single 50-mile loop through the Chiltern Hills from Goring-on-Thames
Other trail races within 168 miles
A 50-mile single loop through the Chiltern Hills, starting and finishing in the riverside village of Goring-on-Thames. The route opens on the hilliest stretch of the Thames Path to Whitchurch, then follows the Chiltern Way past Mapledurham and Sonning Common into the best of the hills: through Bix, across Stonor deer park, down into Turville and steeply up past Cobstone Windmill to Ibstone. From there it climbs to the course high point at Christmas Common, around 800 ft, drops below Watlington Hill onto the Ridgeway, and loops back via Nuffield and Grim's Ditch for a fast run home along one of the quickest sections of the course. About 80% is smooth single and double track, with the rest on quiet lanes, and the 5,600 ft of climbing comes in many short ups and downs rather than long climbs. Five aid stations support runners inside a 13-hour limit, with cutoffs at each. The course is fully marked, and there is no crew or pacer access on course. It is one of Centurion's four 50 Mile Grand Slam races and has sold out every year.

Mid-September in the Chilterns is usually mild and damp. The race lists an average of about 14°C (57°F), 90% humidity and around 60 mm of rain for the month. Much of the route runs through beech woods and sheltered valleys, with more open ground on the Ridgeway and around Christmas Common. Slower runners will finish after sunset, so a headtorch is needed for the last hours.
