Fifty miles of chalk downland from Worthing to the Eastbourne track
Other trail races within 133 miles
A 50-mile point-to-point run along the eastern half of the South Downs Way National Trail in Sussex. From Hillbarn Recreation Ground in Worthing, runners climb six miles of chalk paths and bridleways to join the trail near the Iron Age hillfort of Chanctonbury Ring, then follow the same ground as the last 44 miles of the SDW100: over the Adur and Ouse valleys, past Devil's Dyke country and through the villages of Southease, Alfriston and Jevington. At Alfriston the route takes the bridleway over Windover Hill rather than the Seven Sisters coast path, before dropping into Eastbourne for a finishing lap of the athletics track. About 85% is trail, much of it rough chalk and flint that is slick when wet, with around 5,700 ft of climbing on rolling downs. Six aid stations support runners inside a 13-hour limit, and there is no crew or pacer access. The race opens Centurion's 50 Mile Grand Slam each April and has sold out every year.

Early April on the South Downs is cool and changeable. The race lists an average of about 9°C (48°F), 60% humidity and around 55 mm of rain for the month. The open chalk ridge offers little shelter, so wind and showers can chill runners quickly, and low cloud can cut visibility. After wet weather the chalk and flint turn slippery and some sections get muddy. Later finishers will reach Eastbourne around dusk.
April temperatures average around 9°C; wind on the exposed ridge makes it feel colder
Wet chalk and flint become slippery and parts of the trail turn muddy
Exposed ridge with poor visibility possible under low cloud
