The full South Downs Way National Trail, Winchester to Eastbourne, in one push
Other trail races within 94 miles
A non-stop 100-mile point-to-point run along the entire South Downs Way National Trail in southern England. Runners start in the natural amphitheatre of Matterley Bowl outside Winchester, loop four miles around the private Matterley Estate, then follow the chalk ridgeway east through Hampshire and Sussex to a finishing lap of the athletics track in Eastbourne. The trail rolls over open downland, woodland tracks and farm lanes, with long views over the Weald to the north and the English Channel to the south. No single climb exceeds about 800 ft, but roughly 12,700 ft of total gain, exposed ridges and chalk that turns slick in the wet make it a real test. About 85% of the route is trail and 15% road. The race is fully marked and supported by 12 aid stations, with strict cutoffs at every one inside a 30-hour limit.

Mid-June on the South Downs is usually mild: the race lists an average of about 15°C (59°F), 60% humidity and around 52 mm of rain for the month. Long June days mean most runners get many hours of daylight, but the back half runs through the night when temperatures on the open ridge can drop sharply. Sunny days can feel hot on the shadeless downland, while wind and rain on the exposed ridge chill runners quickly, and wet chalk becomes very slippery.
Exposed chalk becomes slippery and some sections turn muddy after rain
The ridge is very exposed; wind and rain can chill runners fast, especially overnight
