A 100-mile counter-clockwise loop rooted in Butte, Montana's mining history. Starting and finishing beneath the Belmont Mine headframe, the course follows 63 miles of the Continental Divide Trail through the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, crossing high ridgelines and passing the iconic Our Lady of the Rockies statue at mile 58.6 (8,380 ft). The 13,960 feet of gain is concentrated in the middle miles, with the 17.7-mile stretch from Our Lady to Nez Perce being the course's most remote and committing segment.

Car camping at Maroon Activity Center (550 E Mercury St) the night before the race. Tent camping also permitted in a designated area near the start/finish; tents must be taken down before race start.
Late June in Butte brings classic Montana mountain weather. Race day typically starts cool in the high 40s°F at 4:00am before warming to the mid-70s during the afternoon, with strong high-altitude sun and dry air that accelerates dehydration. Overnight, temperatures at the course's highest elevations near Our Lady of the Rockies (8,400 ft) can drop into the 20s°F, creating a 40–50°F swing across the 40-hour event. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the summer mountains and arrive quickly. Past editions have included overnight thunder snowstorms (2023) and refreshing light rain during the day (2025).
