What Makes It Great

The IMTUF 100 is a self-described 'post-doctoral level' mountain ultra that loops through the Salmon River Mountains of central Idaho. Starting and finishing at Jug Mountain Ranch just south of McCall, runners navigate over 22,000 feet of elevation gain across brutal technical terrain — steep granite talus, narrow ridgelines, and deep river canyon descents. The course crosses eight high passes through the Payette National Forest and Idaho Department of Lands, with aid stations spaced widely through genuinely remote backcountry. The peak elk rut typically falls on race weekend, so bugling bulls are a regular trailside companion. Since 2012 it has served as both a Hardrock 100 and Western States 100 qualifier — a reputation earned honestly: 2023 top finishers independently called it harder and more technical than Hardrock.

Rapid Weather Changes

September weather in the Salmon River Mountains can shift rapidly — clear mornings can give way to afternoon thunderstorms and cold nights above treeline

Cold/Hypothermia Risk

Nighttime and high-elevation temperatures can drop sharply; mandatory hooded jacket, buff/beanie, and quality headlamp may be required for runners departing South Crestline after 1:30 PM

Lightning/Thunderstorm Risk

Exposed ridgeline sections (Crestline Trail, high passes) carry afternoon lightning risk common in Idaho mountain summers
