What Makes It Great

A point-to-point downstream journey along the Upper Rogue Wild & Scenic River, following the Upper Rogue River Trail (a National Recreation Trail) for 99% singletrack from the headwaters near Crater Lake to the historic Union Creek staging area. The first 30 miles flow through gently rolling backcountry terrain above pumice canyon rims, while the final 20 miles shift to wider, faster trail punctuated by technical basalt lava rock through Takelma Gorge. Runners pass Natural Bridge — where the entire Rogue River vanishes underground through an ancient lava tube — and finish through the dramatic Rogue Gorge chasm where the river churns through collapsed basalt. Old-growth Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, and sugar pine forest, vibrant fall foliage, and river canyon views define the course throughout.
