What Makes It Great

A 159-kilometer loop through the Oberwallis Alps that demands every ounce of grit a runner possesses. With 10,150 meters of vertical gain — equivalent to climbing Everest from sea level — the course traverses remote mountain passes, crosses three dramatic suspension bridges over deep gorges, and runs beside the UNESCO-listed Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps. Starting Friday morning and finishing Sunday, racers run through two nights across high-alpine terrain with 16 aid stations. Every finisher earns a qualifier for both Western States 100 and Hardrock 100 as well as preferred qualifier status for Badwater 135.

Crew Access Points

Pacer Rules

  • Pacers are allowed starting at the Reckingen aid station (km 74.8) all the way to the finish line. Only one pacer may run with a runner at any time. Pacers can be changed at Blitzingen, Chäserstatt, Binn, Rosswald, and Mühlebach aid stations. Pacers do not need a bib and have full access to aid station food and drink.

Crew Rules

  • Crews can access aid stations at Kühboden, Riederfurka, Bellwald, Reckingen, Blitzingen, Chäserstatt, Binn, Rosswald, and Mühlebach. Driving is recommended; some stations accessible by cable car with the Aletsch Explorer Pass. Crews are strictly limited to crew-access stations only.
Weather

August in the Oberwallis Alps brings daytime highs of 10–26°C (50–80°F) at valley elevations, but conditions change fast. Above treeline, wind chill can push temperatures near freezing even in summer, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. The 2017 edition was canceled 12 hours in due to a complete whiteout storm that began as light rain at the start. Mandatory gear is strictly enforced and essential.

High Altitude

Course reaches 2,926m at Eggishorn and spends extended time above 2,000m; altitude-related fatigue is a significant factor

Cold/Hypothermia Risk

Nighttime wind chill can drop near freezing above treeline even in August; the 2017 race experienced a total whiteout snowstorm 10 hours after a mild start

Lightning/Thunderstorm Risk

Alpine thunderstorms develop rapidly in summer afternoons on exposed ridgelines

Rapid Weather Changes

Conditions can shift from hot sun (26°C / 80°F) to near-freezing storm in a matter of hours — mandatory gear list is strictly enforced
