The Rocky Mountain 50K is the ultra event of Wyoming's longest-running race series, held at the base of the Lincoln Monument on Sherman Summit along I-80 east of Laramie. The hilly out-and-back course rolls through Medicine Bow National Forest on predominantly dirt and gravel roads, starting and finishing at 8,640 feet with the route descending to 8,000 feet at the 35K turnaround. The sparse, no-frills format and big Wyoming sky make it a low-key but memorable high-altitude challenge. The 50K is also considered one of the oldest ultramarathons in the Rocky Mountain Region.

Race day falls on Memorial Day weekend in late May at 8,000–8,700 feet in the Wyoming high country. Temperatures typically range from 40–60°F at the start but can shift dramatically mid-race. Afternoon thunderstorms, sudden hail, and wind gusts above 40 mph are not uncommon. Cold snaps are possible even in late May at this elevation. Runners should pack a wind shell and be prepared for rapid deterioration in conditions during the second half of the course.
