What Makes It Great

A brutal 74-mile point-to-point through the rugged mountains of North Georgia, starting at Byron Herbert Reece Farm near Vogel State Park and finishing at the base of Amicalola Falls. The first 37 miles are almost entirely technical singletrack with relentlessly steep climbs and descents, traversing Coosa Bald, the Duncan Ridge Trail, and the Benton MacKaye Trail. After a brief respite on road and dirt, the soul-crushing Nimblewill Climb arrives at mile 55, followed by a memorable finish: a 1,000 ft descent, a climb of Amicalola Falls' famous staircase, then a final 1,000 ft drop to the creek crossing at the finish line. Every runner must carry a one-pound railroad spike the entire race — finishers place it in a coffin and receive an engraved spike in return.

Race Highlights

Carry the spike
Every runner carries a one-pound railroad spike from start to finish — finishers slam it in a coffin and take home an engraved version
Amicalola Falls finish
The final miles include a 1,000 ft descent, a climb up Georgia's tallest waterfall staircase, and a mandatory creek crossing to reach the finish line
Coosa Bald opener
The first 8 miles include a relentless 2,300 ft climb over 3.8 miles up and over the summit of Coosa Bald with sunrise views over Brasstown Bald
Western States Golden Ticket
A sub-23-hour finish earns an automatic entry to Western States Endurance Run — making GDR one of the few 74-mile golden ticket races in the world
Remote backcountry trails
95% singletrack for the first 37 miles on the remote Benton MacKaye and Duncan Ridge Trails, including the historic Toccoa Swinging Bridge

Finish Awards

Engraved Death Race Spike
Finishers receive their one-pound railroad spike back, engraved — the same spike they carried for 74 miles. Finishers also receive a unique race t-shirt, professional race photographs, and a catered hot meal at the finish.

Weather
Cold/Hypothermia Risk

Late-night temperatures in the exposed Nimblewill ridgeline section regularly drop near freezing even in mild years — hypothermia rescues happen annually

Rapid Weather Changes

March weather in North Georgia is highly unpredictable — expect any combination of heat, rain, wind, and cold within a single race day

High Wind Exposure

Sustained winds on the exposed ridgelines above Nimblewill in the final 20 miles — a major factor for slower runners finishing overnight
