Almost entirely on the Pacific Crest Trail, the Mt Hood Trail Runs 50 Mile is a true out-and-back from the Clackamas Lake Historic Ranger Station south of Mt. Hood. The course splits into two out-and-back legs: south through old-growth forest into the Warm Springs Reservation (with a river crossing), then north along the eastern edge of Timothy Lake past striking views of Mt. Hood to Frog Lake. For 2026 the direction is flipped—south leg runs first. Wild pink Rhododendrons line the trail in July. Generally soft footing with some rocky and rooted technical sections.

Mid-July in the Mt. Hood National Forest at 3,000–4,000 ft elevation. Morning temperatures at the 6am start typically range from 45–55°F (7–13°C), climbing to 65–78°F (18–26°C) by early afternoon. The Pacific Crest Trail is heavily forested, providing substantial natural shade through most of the course. Pacific Northwest summers are generally dry and stable, but afternoon convective thunderstorms can develop over the Cascades in July. Runners tackling the 50-miler should plan for temperature swings across the full day and carry a light rain layer.
