What Makes It Great

The Ultra du Saint Jacques is the marquee distance of this spiritual trail running event — 139 km starting in the medieval town of Saugues at dusk on Friday, running through the night and into Saturday to finish beneath the UNESCO-listed Notre-Dame du Puy-en-Velay Cathedral. The route traverses the Col de Pierre Taillée, Col de la Durande, Lac du Bouchet, and Mont Devès, following historic sections of the GR65 Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage path through the rugged Haute-Loire plateau. A bus transports runners from Le Puy-en-Velay to the start in Saugues.

Crew Rules

  • Crew (one person per runner) is allowed at designated aid stations marked with assistance permitted on the course map. The assistance zone begins 500m before and ends 500m after the aid station. Crew may only provide a bag up to 30L; medical care by crew is forbidden (minor care like massage and blister treatment is permitted, but the runner must remain seated).
Weather
Rapid Weather Changes

June conditions in the Massif Central can be unpredictable — afternoon thunderstorms are possible, especially on exposed ridges. The race mandates hot and cold weather gear kits that may be required based on forecast.

Cold/Hypothermia Risk

Night temperatures on the Haute-Loire plateau can drop significantly, especially above 1000m. Runners cover the coldest hours (2–6 AM) on exposed terrain.
