What Makes It Great

A 100-mile loop through one of the most unusual landscapes in ultrarunning. Starting at the Bonneville Salt Flats Speedway — the same expanse where land-speed records are set — runners cross miles of hard-packed salt, navigate remote desert mud-flats, and then spend the bulk of the course climbing four mountain passes in the Silver Island Range on rugged 4x4 jeep trails and ATV tracks. The course briefly crosses into Nevada and visits Hastings Junction, where the Donner-Reed party camped in 1846. A four-mile sprint back across the salt to the finish is the fitting send-off after 36 hours of desert running.

Race Highlights

Run the land-speed record strip
The first 10 miles follow the Bonneville Salt Flats Speedway where world land-speed records have been set for decades
Floating island mountains
The Silver Island Range peaks appear to rise from the white salt sea — a surreal desert mirage that runners must actually climb
Crosses into Nevada
Only the 100-mile course ventures into Nevada, passing Aid 12 on a remote desert road just past the state line
Donner-Reed camp at Aid 5/7
Hastings Junction (miles 31.6 and 50.4) is where the ill-fated Donner-Reed party camped in 1846 on their way to California
Dogs earn buckles too
One of the only ultras in the world where dogs can officially register, race, and earn the same finisher buckle as their human

Finish Awards

Finisher's Belt Buckle
Awarded to all runners who complete the 100-mile course within the 36-hour cutoff.

Dogs Allowed

Dogs may run anywhere on the course with a registered runner. Runners with dogs MUST have crew support. Dogs may optionally be registered as participants and can earn their own finisher buckle if they complete the full distance.

On-Site Camping Available

Car camping on the Bonneville Salt Flats at the Start/Finish area in dry years. Event toilets provided. Portable fire pits only — no open fires on the salt. All ash and refuse must be taken off the salt.

Crew Access Points

Pacer Rules

  • Pacers may join at Aid Station 5 or 7 (miles 31.6 or 50.4) and continue for the remainder of the course. Pacer swaps are only permitted at crew-accessible aid stations (5/7, 8, 9, 11, 12, and 14).

Crew Rules

  • Crew access permitted at Aid Stations 5 (31.6 mi), 7 (50.4 mi), 8 (57.4 mi), 9 (61.7 mi), 11 (74.3 mi), 12 (82.7 mi), and 14 (96.3 mi). East Silver Island Loop Road is strictly off-limits to all crew vehicles during the race.
Weather

May conditions at the Bonneville Salt Flats can range from pleasant to punishing. Daytime temperatures often reach 75–90°F (24–32°C) on the exposed salt, with little to no shade throughout the course. The salt amplifies UV and radiant heat significantly. Nights cool quickly to the 40s–50°F (4–15°C), so runners need both sun protection and cold layers. Spring winds are a constant and can be strong enough to prevent aid station canopies from being set up. Afternoon thunderstorms are possible but less common than in summer. Race morning typically begins clear and mild, with heat building through the afternoon.

Heat Training Recommended

Daytime temperatures regularly hit 80–90°F on the exposed, shadeless salt flats and desert

High UV Exposure

The reflective white salt surface dramatically increases UV exposure; sunscreen and sun-protective clothing are essential

High Wind Exposure

Persistent desert winds are the norm; strong winds may prevent aid station shade canopies from being deployed

Rapid Weather Changes

Spring weather in the Utah desert can shift rapidly; cold nights follow hot days and brief storms are possible
